Around the globe, individuals and companies alike are looking for ways to lessen the impact their lives and work have on the planet. This trend has put pressure on hotels with conference rooms to offer resource-efficient solutions and The Maslow Sandton has stepped up to the challenge. The Sun International hotel has partnered with GreenDreams, an initiative developed by Climate Neutral Group to help the hospitality sector take action against climate change and achieve its ultimate green goal of becoming a carbon-neutral industry.

‘The Maslow Sandton cares about the environment and takes to heart its obligation to operate in a sustainable manner. As the need for lighting, catering, heating and cooling in conferencing venues contributes to the generation of greenhouse gas emissions, we want to limit the impact of these operations on the environment. This also forms part of a wider aim with Sun International driving sustainability at its other hotels and resorts countrywide,’Ashwin Jose, GM at the Sandton hotel.

Eco-friendlier hotel meeting rooms

Striving to become one of only a few eco-friendly Sandton hotels, The Maslow Sandton offsets the carbon emissions generated by the use of its meeting rooms and conferencing facilities by investing in carbon offsets, at no additional cost to customers. These carbon offsets are used to fund the Wonderbag Project, certified under the Verified Carbon Standard. An innovative cooker, the Wonderbag relies on heat retention cooking to reduce energy needs. Once food is brought to the boil on a different heat source, the warm pot is placed in the Wonderbag so the food can cook slowly without using any further energy. The Wonderbag is used to prepare dishes ranging from casseroles and curries to cooked salads. It also saves water due to less evaporation.

‘By offsetting the carbon emissions generated by our meeting rooms and conference facilities with the Wonderbag project, we’re making strides towards being carbon neutral while supporting a sustainability project aimed at improving the quality of life for people in our local communities. This makes meeting room rental all the more rewarding’says Jose.

Complimentary sustainability initiatives

With the aim to provide eco-friendly accommodation in Sandton, The Maslow hotel’s commitment to sustainability doesn’t end there, with other programmes in place that contribute to making a positive impact on the community and reducing the hotel’s environmental footprint. These include: responsible water management via a fully operational borehole; eco-friendly car wash facilities and irrigation cycles; composting of wet waste; the use of LED globes throughout the hotel; various recycling initiatives; and the deployment of environmentally-friendly methods to dispose of chemicals and pesticides.

The Maslow Sandton also boasts a rooftop garden where herbs and vegetables are grown for use in the hotel’s kitchen and restaurants. The eco-friendly Sandton hotel is also involved with the community through pop-up mobile soup kitchens, providing blankets and warm meals to various townships in Gauteng.

‘Business and leisure travellers are becoming more responsible about their travel choices, and are looking for convenient ways to ‘green’ their travelling and hotel accommodation as much as they can.’Nishanthi Lambrichs, Programme Manager for GreenDreams

The Maslow Sandton is one of a few hotels in Sandton that we have partnered with to help reduce its impact on the environment and give its clients peace of mind when looking at hotel conference room rental.
