Long before lights shimmered across The Boardwalk, Algoa Bay’s coastline was a meeting place shaped by trade, travel, and deep cultural roots. Today, that same shoreline in Summerstrand, Gqeberha is home to one of the Eastern Cape’s most beloved destinations: Boardwalk Hotel, Casino and Entertainment World.
This is the story of how a quiet seaside suburb became a vibrant entertainment precinct, and how The Boardwalk grew into a hub for leisure, business, and unforgettable coastal experiences.

Centuries before Gqeberha became one of South Africa’s major ports, the region was home to the San and Xhosa communities who lived across Algoa Bay. In 1820, British settlers arrived and established what would become Port Elizabeth, a city built around maritime trade, industry, and one of the friendliest reputations in the country.
To the south-east, the coastline evolved into Summerstrand, a relaxed beachfront neighbourhood lined with Hobie, Pollok and Kings Beaches and framed by warm breezes from the Indian Ocean. Over time, the area became a natural draw for travellers, academics, and families looking for sea, sun, and open space.

By the late 1990s, the potential of Summerstrand’s beachfront was undeniable. What it needed was a landmark, a catalyst to transform the area into a tourism and business hub.
That moment arrived in 2000 with the opening of Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World. Close to 20 000 locals gathered in Summerstrand for the opening, Port Elizabeth’s first legal casino and entertainment complex, marking a new era for the Eastern Cape.
The development brought:
Almost overnight, The Boardwalk became a centre of social life, weekend leisure, and corporate entertainment — a place where Gqeberha came alive.

As the entertainment world flourished, demand grew for quality accommodation and professional conferencing facilities along the beachfront. This led to the creation of Boardwalk Hotel and its adjoining Convention Centre, a purpose-built modern facility designed to host everything from business conferences and seminars to gala dinners, exhibitions, and large-scale events.
The hotel’s look and feel were carefully chosen to complement its seaside setting:
It quickly became a favourite for both business and leisure travellers who wanted the convenience of a fully integrated destination: stay, meet, dine, play, and unwind, all in one place.
