Boardwalk and Gqeberha Residents Rally Behind Yokhuselo Haven Through Fashion Show

This Women’s Month, Gqeberha came alive with a celebration of courage, beauty, and empowerment at the Voice of Courage Fashion Show, held at the Boardwalk ICC. The fashion show concept was a collaborative effort between Boardwalk Hotel and Casino and Camelot Spa, to provide women a platform to shine and celebrate the beauty of womanhood while raising much-needed funds for Yokhuselo Haven. R60 000 was raised through ticket sales and has gone towards supporting the women and children who call the Haven their safe space.

The night of the fashion show was a truly spectacular affair, with an electric atmosphere, guests filled with excitement and a shared spirit of accomplishment as models graced the runway donning the new season trends, including some of the women from Yokhuselo Haven, who bravely stepped forward to share their strength and stories through fashion.

Antoinette Hammon, accountant at Yokhuselo Haven, expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved. “We are truly thankful not only to the residents who purchased tickets but also to Boardwalk Hotel and Casino, the talented fashion designers and hairstylists, Woolworths make-up division, and Camelot Spa for their support.”

Beyond immediate safety, Yokhuselo Haven focuses on long-term empowerment. Residents receive skills training to help them find employment, trauma counselling, and guidance through legal processes to help women rebuild their lives, while the children are provided with educational tools to support their growth.

 “Up to 11 ladies and children can stay with us, and the money will be put to good use paying for electricity, water, food, toiletries, medicines, and transporting women to court for protection orders. It costs around R35 000 to provide this safe haven, so every cent makes a difference. The youngsters especially love the dining area. Many have never seen a proper table before, but with us, they enjoy a warm bed, cosy lounge, kitchen facilities, and even a playroom.” Hammon concluded

Boardwalk General Manager Tati Tsunke emphasised the importance of community support in the fight against gender-based violence. “There is no room for gender-based violence to exist in 2025. We must all continue to unite to provide organisations like Yokhuselo Haven with the resources they need to give these women and children real alternatives in their lives.”

The Voice of Courage Fashion Show highlighted the amazing talent of the fashion designers and also reminded the community of the power of coming together for a worthy cause. With contributions like these, Yokhuselo Haven can continue to be a safe space for those who need it most.
