Socio-Economic Development

Socio-economic development (SED) forms an integral part of Sun International’s business strategies, which assist in creating shared value and achieving the company’s licence conditions, B-BBEE and corporate governance processes. Our units are located in various communities globally.

As part of Sun International’s social licence to operate, we strive to uplift, empower and share value across these communities to build greater community cohesion, as they are critical to our future sustainability.

Our vision is to deliver sustainable social development projects that improve the lives of people in the communities we work in for the better.

Highlights

  • R16-million invested in socio-economic development (SED) projects across our focus areas: education, sports, and arts and culture.
  • Launched Sun International’s Hospitality Curriculum Development programme – a public private partnership with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) – with over 4 100 registered users on the Digital Hospitality curriculum online.
  • Approximately 60 000 children will be fed five meals a week for the school year through our partnership with Rise Against Hunger South Africa.
  • Successfully implemented SED projects in various communities where we operate in line with our focus areas – education, sports, and arts and culture.

Strategy

As a responsible corporate citizen, Sun International understands the necessity of empowering communities in the areas in which we operate. Therefore, SED forms a key component of the group’s sustainable business strategy. We not only create economic value, but also aim to maximise the social impact we have on the communities as well as on our business by creating shared value.

Creating Shared Value:

  • 70% of the SED spend is allocated to group projects.
  • 30% is allocated to property-specific projects.
  • SED initiatives are focused on education, sports, and arts and culture initiatives.
  • Effective stakeholder engagement is critical to the group and continues to receive focus.

SED Applicants

The following criteria applies when registering for any socio-economic development assistance:

  • Must be a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) and/or be a section 21 (not for gain) company and /or a registered charitable trust.
  • Must have been in existence for more than two years; and
  • Have audited financial statements.

Exclusions

Sun International’s socio-economic development programme does not provide assistance for:

  • Religious groups and their activities.
  • Political parties and their activities.
  • Travel.
