Cape Town’s colourful past is celebrated at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World. From the virtuous Victorian architecture to the vibrancy of the streets of District Six, to the smartness of the Grand Hotel – this historical recreation is both a memorial to the past and a modern-day monument to entertainment.
GrandWest was opened in December 2000 and is set on a 56-hectare site in Goodwood, Cape Town. It is Africa’s leading casino and is one of South Africa’s leading leisure destinations.
Besides the largest casino in the country (with 1 714 slot machines and 50 gaming tables) and a Salon Privé for the higher-stakes gambler, GrandWest boasts the Ice Station, an Olympic-standard ice rink, six state-of-the-art cinemas, a fast-food court with a mini ice rink, two nightclubs with live entertainment, an eclectic array of fine dining restaurants and a children’s facility run by the Magic Company.
A major 2005 expansion programme delivered a dedicated smoking casino, dining and other family entertainment amenities, a ten-pin bowling alley, and the 5 000-seat multi-purpose Grand Arena, which has become Cape Town’s premier large-scale venue, attracting a constant stream of entertainers, sportsmen, and musicians from home and abroad.
On-site accommodation is available at either the luxurious Grand Hotel, on which a R122-million project began in 2022 to expand the frequently fully booked four-star property from 39 to 100 rooms, or the more affordable adjoining City Lodge.
