Going Green in South Africa: Carnival City Takes the Initiative

How Carnival City is going green

“I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I think to myself what a wonderful world.”

Louis Armstrong’s iconic song What a Wonderful World was decades ahead of its time – especially with regard to green initiatives – but to ensure we that have a ‘wonderful world’ to hand over to future generations, we need to work much harder at helping our planet out of its vulnerable state.

Going green in South Africa is a forward-thinking attitude that Sun International encourages every business to adopt, and at Carnival City, we are focusing on setting up eco-friendly systems and spearheading conservation efforts in a number of ways. Here are some of our initiatives:

Reduce, reuse and recycle!

Almost every man-made structure generates waste which is why reducing, reusing and recycling waste is such an important part of green initiatives. Carnival City has reduced its waste output significantly and we have also entered into a strategic partnership with Interwaste to make recycling a top priority.
With the help of Interwaste’s on-site solutions, paper, cardboard boxes, cans, glass and plastic are recycled each month.

Less landfill waste

As landfills are among the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, Carnival City is seeking positive solutions to reach a zero-waste-to-landfill status. Currently, we are in the process of acquiring a waste company to divert food and non-recyclable waste from landfill sites to energy projects.

Water-wise solutions

There is no doubt about it: South Africa is in the middle of the worst drought in several decades and to this end, every effort needs to be made to conserve water. As part of Carnival City’s water-wise programme, 14 rain sensors have been installed to conserve water by interrupting the automated sprinklers during a downpour.

Energy-efficient Initiatives

Carnival City has implemented several energy-conserving solutions, including heat pumps and energy-saver lamps in street lights on the property. Heat pumps were installed at Carnival City in 2012 because they have lower carbon emissions and do not comprise combustible materials. As LED lights
are energy-efficient and do not contain mercury or other materials which are hazardous to the environment, these have been used in down-lights and billboards in and around Carnival City.
Moreover, traditional boilers have been converted into storage tanks for the hot water generated
by the heat pumps used on site.
